What are Online Dating Scams and what to do if I was scammed
 Starting from 12 December 2007, NextWink has been 99.9% scammer free.
Registrations have been tightened to only open to people from Australia and New Zealand IP addresses. This has effectively eliminated all attempts from overseas computers.
This is a lengthy page because the topic can never be emphasised enough. The page will keep getting longer every now and then.
Feel free to jump to Visitors/Members comments section or
fake profiles section. Fake profiles registered on NextWink (this happens to all online dating websites, paid and free) and their IP addresses have been traced to Nigeria or other a few offending countries such as Senegal, Ghana, etc.
(and they have been banned of course). These fake profiles are so-called Romance Scams - one of the many forms of Nigerian scams. By reading their messages below,
I hope you can get a feel about the common themes they portrait about themselves so that you would detect red flags in
early stages of this kind of scam.
If the person claims he/she is outside Australia/New Zealand, or short on cash, you should be on an immediate alert.
Update (23 July 2007): How con artists play the dating scam in the real world
I just created a new page about online dating scammers. First, I'd like to thank NextWink members who have emailed me and sent
me useful information on this. It has greatly helped me to compile the new page.
In the last couple of weeks, the number of scammers popping up on NextWink has dropped significantly. I have put quite a
few blocking mechanisms to either stop them from viewing the whole site, or flag / suspend their accounts. It has been very effective so far.
Update (6 July 2007): Male scammers
Most scammers list on this page have female profile. Be aware that male scammers also exist. One member emailed me today
and told me her story on another dating site. Here is her email (sorry, I can't tell you her username):
Just wish i had read your message a few months ago would have saved me thousands of dollars....too late for me but i hope the message gets through to others.....
I was scammed real good......He was very very good and i believed him.....They are as you say on nearly every dating site on the net....He didnt come from this site,
he was from (URL removed to protect you - Admin). and you know the annoying thing is that he is still on that site....i have told them but they didnt seem too interested.
Update (5 July 2007): Email from scammers
A member (thanks parttimedad) received an email on 3 July from the "Nigerian Anti-Scam Department" telling him about how they were
busting scammers and thanked him for a message he had sent them (which he didn't) and asking him to follow a link
to a virus-loaded fake webpage on a zombie network they were running in the US.
If you ever receive this kind of email, DO NOT FOLLOW the links in that email.
Here is the Nigerian scam email. I removed the links on the email. I don't want you to visit the virus-loaded website.
Nigerian romance scammers post fake profiles and target our members for emotional sympathy, trust, love, and eventually money. Don't open your hearts and wallets to them.
Their membership accounts are suspended as soon as they are found. Site-wide IP bans have also been implemented to ban Internet traffics from Nigeria and a few other offending countries.
While I'm doing my best to protect NextWink members, please make 1000% sure that you never, ever send any money to a person you have never met, no matter how true or how emotional their story may sound.
A common Romance Scam normally involves these steps:
The scammer posts an attractive photo (such as attractive professional models) and fake profile on the dating website.
Send messages to many members even though their profiles do not match at all.
In the message, the scammer normally shows some interests in the victim's profile and asks if the victim wants to know more about the scammer. Most of the time an email address of the scammer is included in the message.
If the scammer gets replies, he/she would make up stories and would normally claim how bad his/her current situation is and needs help to overcome it in some way. The scammer's story could be very emotional and easily gain sympathy and affection from the victim.
The scammer gradually lures the victim away from the messaging channels provided by the dating website towards external means such as personal emails, instant messaging, telephone calls, or even webcam (this is the scary part. They will find excuses not to show their real faces but they could take photos of the victim via webcam. Sometimes they ask the victim to get naked. The scammer would later demand for money by threatening with exposure of the victim's naked photos on internet).
No matter what the story is, after a period of establishing trust, romance, and desire, the scammer will ask for money to be sent in forms such as cash money orders for them, or send merchandise to them, currency exchange via a telegraphic money transfer service, usually Western Union or Moneygram, etc.
The scammer keeps asking for money until the victim can't afford or the fraud is perceived.
Note that the scammers steal attractive photos from other websites and use them in their fake profiles, so these photos have nothing to do with these scammers.

Common red flags on scammers profile
A scammer normally creates profiles on multiple sites and they use pre-written profile copies. After having seen how they compose their usernames, profiles, and how they behave on a site, I have summed up the following tips to share with readers.
Tip 1: Red flag in general
The overall pattern of the dating scam is that a person who may contact you in order to obtain money. Scammers will use a false gender, name, age, country, occupation. They will describe them as honesty, kind, loyal, truthful, sweet, and caring. They will make up stories about their misfortunate and are in-need of your help.
Tip 2: Red flags in username
A scammer's username normally consists of love, trust, or sympathy related terms which are often combined with common first names. Common love, trust, or sympathy related terms include luv, love, nice, honest, faith, sweet, baby, care, angel, lonely, alone, 4u, real, etc. Commonly used first names are nancy, suzy, monic, cyndy, debby, sonia, jane, lori, laura, vanessa, etc.
Often the username can also contain some numbers at the end to help the scammers easily remember or track their uses on different dating sites. For example 'Vivian' may have '001' at the end.

Tip 3: Red flags in email address
The most popular used email service by scammers is Yahoo Mail. Patterns in email addresses are similar to those in scammer usernames.

Tip 4: Red flags in dating profile description
The dating site scammer often polish their personality traits in their profile as "easygoing, honesty, quiet, kind, loyal, truthful, straight forward, sincere, loving, understanding, caring, elegant, sociable, sensitive, gentle, cheerful, optimistic, romantic, warm, cuddly, hard-working, goal orientated, ambitious"...
Scammers use terms that are not normally used in the area location which they list in their profile. One scammer claimed to be in Australia and listed one of her favorite things as summer long rides on a motorcycle heading towards small villages. That's an obvious lie as there are no villages in Australia except farms. People don't use the word "village" in Australia for the meaning of rural regions or countryside area.
Tip 5: Red flags in chatting, messages or emails
This is a list of red flags that normally will happen after communications with the scammer started, either by way of text chat, on-site messages, or emails.
-- They quickly declare that they have fallen in love with you and insist that you have made a huge change in their lives.
-- They would normally say they live or born in USA, UK, Australia but have to go overseas to work in Ghana, Nigeria, or somewhere in Africa. But will be coming home soon.
-- They will spill their guts to you that how misfortunate they've been. The stories are always similar and play on your sympathies. One example is that they say they are widowed and their spouse and children are killed in an accident. They eventually tell you that they need some kind of help. Generally that help comes down to help with money. If this person was standing in front of you face to face, would you accept what they had to say?
-- Most scammers are from Africa or Russia, the scammers may misuse some terms that are obviously wrong. For example, in a chat during the day, a scammer who claimed to be in Brisbane and he kept saying "night" continuously.
-- Scammers will normally claim they don't visit the dating site often and request you to contact them directly via their email address or add them directly to your Instant Messenger.
Tip 6: Red flags in the member's age
Age for female scammers are normally span from 25 to 30 and they always try to target male dating members who are between 40 and 60 years of age because this age group is normally financially secure.
Age for male scammers are normally span from 40 to 50 and they always try to target female dating members who are between 40 and 60 years of age.
Tip 7: Red flags in photos
Most of the female scammers profiles use photos stolen from modeling websites, so the photos look neat and are very professionally taken.
Many male scammers use photos that appear to be everyday snaps. Scammers from African countries will send a passport-like photo of themselves. It will be very grainy and somewhat aged.
Tip 8: Red flags in English grammar and spelling
Grammar and spelling errors are normally everywhere in a scammer's profile and message. You can easily spot it, especially when the scammer shows you he/she has good education background such as Masters degree.
What to do if you suspect that someone is trying to scam you?
Some members ask the scammer questions about Australia (where she/he is living, what towns are around, Football or cricket questions, etc) and many times the scammer wouldn't have a clue.
Report your suspicion by contacting me. I will check out and monitor the reported profile and suspend it if it is a scam.

One of my contacts says "she" is held in Nigeria by "her landlord" who got hold of her passport since she could not make rent payments email is used kellybuck91@yahoo.com. She started asking me I f I could her her out so that she can get out of the country to be with me. I researched about possible scams and in recent emails "she" claims that she is not scamming me for $575. I have not responded to the last email because of the tone changed. Its not shocker that "she" has not been evicted let alone have Internet access to email me to ask me why I am holding out or lying to "her" that I am in love with her. I also got 5 other "russian" loves emailing me. The photos looks legit because they are do not look like professional photos or glamorous. still that does not mean that they are not stolen photos of real women looking for love. So I still playing along and see who is or is not scamming me. Who else can we report possible scammers for investigation? Andrewz trif scammer, John Sulay Scammer. Andrew trif scam. Andrewz says he is a German born US Military officer who said he was in Afghanistan and retiring to the UK who has sent a parcel with a diplomat called John Sulay the parcel got held in Ghana and it has US dollars in it. The US army guy is called Andrew Trid, alias Andrewz Trif, he says he as 2 daughters called Jayne and Anna, nick names Janny and he lives in Fulham. He uses a website called poemslovers to copy and paste is lies into the emails. They also pretend that Interpol are onto them and that Andrewz is going to be arrested. The Interpol email part of the scam will advise you not to tell anyone or they will come for you and not to give Andrewz any money. This is a dupe to create another angle to get money from you, so are the lies about daughters living in London under the care of nanny. He also says that his wife died. All LIES, The emails are below and are all set up in Mountain View, CA, Richmond WA, Sunny!

The picture is fake, the diplomat will ask you for ?600 for the package, Andrewz will ask for ?000 for his kids?holiday,(they will claim that they will pay you back when he gets the package carrying $500,000 and then a bloke called Mark will ring claiming to be in London with the package and ask for money to. If they cant get money they will try and groom you to meet him in Spain, Madrid where he will not turn up, they will try to arrange for a car to pick you up to meet him do not fall for this. They will steal from you. Ask for address in UK and check electoral roll, and all other public info to verify. Ask for D.O.B and N.I, ask !

a LIE. Scam, scammer. Packages are only released by embassy and are paid for prior to release, to renew an expired tag you must go to the embassy and follow the same process do not give money it is a scam.
